Base Jumping from a Drone

Skydivers are some of the coolest people around for a variety of reasons. They aren’t afraid of anything, they live life to the fullest, and they are always coming up with new and amazing ways to be airborne.

They also have the best stories because lets face it, unless you were born with wings, your stories have a hard time competing.

Air sports, like skydiving, hang gliding, parachuting and paragliding, have been hugely popular for decades. Since humans could walk, humans have wanted to fly. Young or old, there is always someone who is coming up with a new and outrageous way to get in the air and stay there for as long as possible.

This year that someone was skydiver Ingus Augustkalns. History was made in Eastern Europe when Aerones, a Latvian industrial company that specializes in creating large drones, and Ingus, teamed up to attempt the world’s first drone jump.

The drone lifted Ingus from a local radio tower, carried him thousands of feet into the sky, and dropped him. He went into free fall for about 45 seconds before opening his parachute and drifting slowly back to Earth.

The world’s first drone jump was a success!

Ingus and the Aerones team practiced this jump for 6 months, carrying out flights over water and land.

Aerones drones have 28 propellers and are capable of lifting 220 lbs. They are also used for fighting fires and in search and rescue operations.

What did Ingus have to say about being the world’s first ever drone jumper? “Definitely also my friends skydivers all over the world will be excited about these new opportunities. We live in an exciting time.”

This first-ever drone jump will most certainly not be the last.
