Victoria climber credited with life-saving assist after Mount Prevost hang glider crash

A Victoria, B.C. man is being credited with helping save an injured pilot after a hang glider crashed on Mount Prevost, northwest of Duncan on Vancouver Island, on Feb. 6, 2026, according to published reports.

Gripped Magazine reports that Matthew Clark was part of a group launching from Mount Prevost when another member of the group crashed. Pilots in the group called 911, and Clark retrieved emergency medical supplies and headed toward the crash area with an RCMP officer.

At the crash site, Clark encountered a short but steep section that required a climb of about 10 metres (33 feet)to reach the injured pilot, who Gripped reports was hanging unconscious in his harness. Clark then climbed up without a rope, reached the pilot, and—after the RCMP officer tossed him a knife—Clark cut the pilot loose.

Clark, who had completed wilderness first aid training, treated the pilot, including addressing a leg wound and wrapping the injured area, then placed a blanket around the pilot while awaiting rescuers. The pair were later airlifted out after search-and-rescue crews arrived.
