The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
Cowley County in south central Kansas...
Southern Butler County in south central Kansas...

* Until 1045 AM CDT.

* At 451 AM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing
heavy rain across the warned area. Up to five inches of rain have
already fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring or
will shortly.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Arkansas City, Winfield, Augusta, Douglass, Leon, Burden, Dexter,
Atlanta, Latham, Rock, Cambridge, Maple City, Winfield City Lake,
Strother Field Airport, Beaumont and Santa Fe Lake.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying
spots.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of Central, South
Central and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight


Numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue for most of today.
While some thunderstorms may reach severity, the greatest threat is
that of heavy rains that would aggravate the flooding situation. For
most rivers, significant rises will occur. All flood-related
products should be monitored closely both today and tonight as rivers
often continue to rise after the rains have ended.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday


Occasional thunderstorms, several of which may be strong or severe,
will occur in all areas from Wednesday night thru next Sunday. More
heavy rains are likely and would likely cause further flooding.
With the tremendous rainfalls and flooding that have already
occurred, all forecasts should be monitored closely!

Significant to very significant flooding will continue for most
rivers throughout the week. You should continue monitor all flood
warnings and flood statements closely!

AFTERNOON...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Portions of Central Kansas, South Central Kansas, and Southeast
Kansas, including the following areas, in Central Kansas,
Barton, Chase, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, Rice,
Russell, and Saline. In South Central Kansas, Butler, Cowley,
Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Reno, Sedgwick, and Sumner. In
Southeast Kansas, Allen, Chautauqua, Elk, Greenwood, Labette,
Montgomery, Neosho, Wilson, and Woodson.

* Until 4 PM CDT this afternoon.

* Widespread moderate to heavy rain is likely until early this
afternoon. Estimated rainfall amounts from 2 to 5 inches have
occurred in many areas, especially South-Central and Southeast
Kansas. An additional 1 to 2 inches are likely by mid-morning.

* Rainfall of this magnitude will continue to cause significant
rises and flooding on many rivers, creeks and streams. Locally
intense rainfall may also lead to flash flooding of rural and
urban areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are imminent that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Remember to turn around, don`t drown. You should monitor later
forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood
warnings be issued.

afternoon. The river will fall below flood stage late Wednesday
morning.
* Impact...At 28.0 feet...Flooding of secondary roads as well as
flooding of parts of the railroads south of Augusta will occur.

* At 3:00 AM Tuesday the stage was 23.2 feet.
* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and Major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast...The river will continue rising to near 34.1 feet by
early Wednesday afternoon. The river will fall below flood stage
Friday before midnight.
* Impact...At 30.5 feet...Flood waters cover sections of Highway 77
north of Winfield and the road under Highway 77 bridge south of
town.

* Flood stage is 19.0 feet.
* Forecast...The river is expected to rise to near flood stage this
morning.
* Impact...At 19.0 feet...Some flooding of low-lying areas and bottom
land can be expected. Overflows especially on the upstream left
bank will occur. Flood waters will impact Riverside Park by
covering walk pathways and inundating playground equipment.

The Whitewater River at Towanda.
* Until late Wednesday night.
* At 2:30 AM Tuesday the stage was 22.7 feet.
* Flood stage is 22.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and Major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast...The river will continue rising to near 28.0 feet by
early Wednesday morning. The river will fall below flood stage
Wednesday afternoon.
* Impact...At 28.0 feet...Water level reaches about 2 ft on property 1
mile upstream, on east side of the river around River Valley Road.
More extensive flooding of cropland can be expected. Many county
roads in low areas will be inundated near the vicinity of the
river.

...A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 230 PM CDT TUESDAY FOR

RENO...BUTLER...SOUTHWESTERN MARION...KINGMAN...SUMNER...SOUTHERN
GREENWOOD...ELK...COWLEY...SEDGWICK...HARVEY...HARPER...SOUTHERN RICE
AND CHAUTAUQUA COUNTIES...

At 820 PM CDT, local law enforcement reported flooding across the
warned area. An average of 2 to 3 inches of rain have fallen.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Wichita, Hutchinson, Derby, Newton, El Dorado, Arkansas City,
Winfield, Andover, Haysville, Augusta, Wellington, Park City, Valley
Center, Bel Aire, Mulvane, Goddard, Rose Hill, Hesston, Maize and
Kingman.

An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible during the overnight
time period in the warned area. This additional rain is likely to
make the flooding worse in flood prone areas. There are numerous
main roads in Wichita that are now flooded and closed. This is also
the case in other urban areas in the warned area.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.
