As beautiful fall weather breaks across the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, balloonists from all over the world are rallying in Albuquerque for the 42nd annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.  The event runs from October 5th to October 13th, 2013, and is the world’s largest hot air balloon festival.  It includes approximately 600 balloons.  Visitors and participants number in the thousands. In hot air balloon news, competitors from all over will participate in the National Hot Air Balloon Championship from July 22 to 28. This competition, hosted by the state of Texas, will feature a balloon race featuring more than 70 pilots throughout the week. The event is which started on Monday, will last throughout the week and allow pilots to compete for the chance at winning $50,000. Those are just some of the attractions planned for the Lamesa, Texas, Crossroads Balloon Rally and Chicken-Fried Steak Festival. Organizers are expecting between 20 and 40 balloonists for the second annual event which will be held April 26-28 in this West Texas community located about 60 miles south of Lubbock. Dozens of hot air balloonists will salute one of their brethren this weekend at the Carolina BalloonFest. This year’s 39th annual festival is dedicated to the memory of Edward Ristaino, an area balloonist who died in a crash in March. This festival is held each year in Iredell County (Statesville, N.C.). The American team of pilot Cheri White and co-pilot Mark Sullivan are the unofficial winners of the America’s Challenge gas balloon race. White and Sullivan along with four other teams launched their balloons on Sunday evening, the weather-delayed opening day for the 41st annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The pair landed safely on Wednesday near Buelaville, N.C. The flight covered 1,627 miles (2,618 km) and lasted almost 64 hours, making it the fourth longest flight in the Challenge’s 17-year history.
