Skydiver Survives Dramatic Scoreboard Crash During Virginia Tech Spring Game

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A pre-game parachute demonstration at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium turned into a frightening rescue scene when a skydiver carrying an American flag slammed into the stadium scoreboard and was left dangling above the field.

The incident, shown in an ABC News YouTube video titled “Skydiver slams into Virginia Tech scoreboard, dangles by parachute,” happened before Virginia Tech’s spring football game on April 18, 2026. Video footage shows the parachutist descending toward the stadium before striking the large video board near the “Tech” lettering and becoming tangled between the “C” and “H.”

The skydiver was later identified as Pasha Palanker, a military veteran, motivational speaker, and experienced parachutist. Palanker said unexpected wind shear pushed him off course, with gusts reaching up to 27 knots—nearly double his team’s stated 14-knot safety limit.

Palanker was carrying a large American flag during the demonstration. He later said the flag system included a 26-pound anchor and that he released the flag after impact to keep it from being caught by the wind and creating more danger below.

Fans watched as emergency crews worked to reach him. According to local reporting, rescue efforts became visible about 10 minutes after the crash, and a ladder truck with a bucket was eventually used to reach Palanker. He was seen walking out of the stadium under his own power later that afternoon.

Virginia Tech officials said the skydiver was safely secured and stable after the incident. The university also thanked first responders, event staff, and medical personnel for their coordinated response.

For the airsports community, the crash is a sobering reminder that stadium demonstration jumps carry unique risks. Unlike open drop zones, stadium environments can create difficult wind patterns, tight landing areas, and limited outs when conditions change late in the approach.

Palanker said the scoreboard may have prevented a worse outcome by stopping him from being blown toward the stands or over the back of the structure. Despite the impact and injuries he described afterward, he indicated he plans to return to skydiving once recovered.

The spring game was delayed, but the most important result came before kickoff: the parachutist survived, spectators were spared injury, and a dramatic airsports mishap ended with a successful rescue.
