Hot Air Balloon Carrying 13 Makes Emergency Landing in California Backyard

TEMECULA, Calif. — A sightseeing hot air balloon flight over Southern California ended with an unusually precise emergency landing when a balloon carrying 13 people came down in a small residential backyard in Temecula.

The incident, featured in an ABC News YouTube video titled “Hot air balloon with 13 people makes emergency landing in …,” happened on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The large balloon, carrying a pilot and passengers, descended into a grassy backyard owned by Hunter Perrin. According to the Associated Press, Perrin did not initially realize a balloon had landed at his home until a neighbor alerted him.

The landing was remarkable because of the limited space available. The backyard’s grassy area was reported to be only about 10 feet wide, leaving little margin for error as the balloon settled near the home, fence, and trees. Despite the tight landing zone, no injuries were reported, and the balloon did not strike the house.

Passenger Brianna Avalos, who was aboard with her husband to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, said the pilot told passengers that an emergency landing was necessary because of low fuel and shifting winds. Those two factors can be especially important in ballooning, where pilots rely on wind direction at different altitudes and must choose suitable landing areas as conditions change.

After landing in the backyard, the pilot unloaded the passengers, then lifted off again and moved the balloon to a nearby street, where it was dismantled. The balloon itself was described as blue with gold stars and a crescent moon design, making it a highly visible and memorable arrival for the neighborhood.

Denni Barrett, owner of Magical Adventure, the company that operates balloon rides, praised the pilot’s decision-making and said he had done the right thing under the circumstances. Barrett noted that most company landings occur in the wider open areas of Riverside County wine country, rather than in compact residential yards.

For the airsports community, the episode highlights both the beauty and unpredictability of balloon flight. Unlike powered aircraft, hot air balloons cannot simply turn toward a runway. Pilots must constantly read wind, terrain, fuel status, obstacles, and available landing sites. In this case, the pilot’s ability to place the basket in a narrow backyard, unload passengers safely, and reposition the aircraft afterward turned a tense emergency into a successful landing story.
