It almost seems that the instructor enjoyed his miseries to some degree by allowing him to roll for a while before saving him. It’s more likely though that the instructor was hoping that the student would figure it out himself. However, all’s well once the instructor levels him out for the second time.

This technique of coaching is called accelerated freefall training. It’s the quickest way for a student to learn how to skydive.
